Clothing

The clothing we use works on a layer system. First comes a base thermal layer. We have used Helly Hansen thermal underwear on all our previous trips. Its great stuff, very comfortable and most importantly very warm. Next comes a Polartec layer. This consists of a trouser and a top . There are many different makes on the market, but we both use a mixture of Lowe Alpine and Marmot. Really tough and again very warm. Over the top comes the Windsuit. These are made from Pertex and are an extreme piece of kit. Made by RAB they do exactly what they say on the tin! They keep the winds off the body but are also able to “vent” heat away from the body by having zips all over them. It is very important to not get to hot whilst traveling in the arctic (as when you stop the sweat freezes!) so the multitude of zips helps to vent the heat from the body so avoiding the problem.

The other areas of the body left to cover up are heads and hands. We carry a multitude of hats between us  from mountain caps to balaclavas but our standard fair is a fleece hat. We also both carry a BUFF which can be used in a variety of different ways. For our hands we wear Extremities “Sticky” gloves for normal day to day to wear.  These are adequate when the temperatures have not dropped below about -10degC. Below that and when it is windy we use RAB Windmitts. These are big Yellow Mittens which are extremely warm but are not very “usable”. They are fine for holding onto a ski pole but you cant do much more than that!

Steve in the BUFF! It is said that you an wear it in 100 different ways!
