Pulks and Tents

Pulks

There are various pulks available,  most are suited to a particular place or length of trip. The standard pulk used for Greenland is rather orignally named the Greenland Pulk! These come in a variety of sizes, the most common being 1.3m and 1.7m versions. We will be using the slightly larger 1.7m version as we have extra equipment to carry in the shape of the science experiments we are carrying out for the school children. As we are also unguided and unsupported we have to carry all spares and backups as well. Most guided trips have known caches of emergency supplies on the ice and those lovely guides normally carry extra equipment for their paying clients. We dont have that luxury! Our good friend Roger Daynes from Snowsled - http://www.snowsled.com/index.htm) - is yet again supplying our pulks which we will be taking delivery of in the next few weeks.

Tent

There are a few companies in the market place which supply tents able to put up with the  extremes of weather that an Arctic Expedition can throw at you.  Steve and I were introduced to the Terra Nova range in 2005 and have stuck with the same design since. In fact we have the same tent! It has looked after us through thick and thin and with a few added refinements has been a good friend. At the end of the day it is home and without it we wouldnt survive long - so we look after it and it looks after us!

The outer tent has two ends - A cooking end placed so that it is on the lee side of the weather and a smaller “door” end. This is how we get in and out of the tent and where we store boots at the end of the day and also where we go to the toilet if the weather is too bad outside!

The basic two man version of the tent is made of two pieces, an outer and an inner. The inner is put up first with four poles and then the outer then goes over the top. We have added a Valance all the way around the tent which we can then lay blocks of snow and ice upon which helps to anchor us down. Our skis are inserted into large rings at each of the tent and then driven into the snow which is the main way of keeping the tent firmly fixed down. We also carry Ice Screws which we can use to help anchor the tent when there is no snow cover.
